- ICQ
- Not an abbreviation, but internet slang for "I Seek You", the
ICQ community is basically an international open chat room where
you can communicate instantly and freely with anybody else on the
planet who is tapped into the system in real time (live) on the
net. If you don't already have an ICQ account, you can sign up
today at ICQ.com.
- Inbound Link
- A link from another website to your website. This is an
important factor in Google' Page Rank algorithm. The website that
gave the inbound link to you is called the "referrer".
- Inktomi
- This is how Inktomi describe themselves on their website:
"Based in Foster City, Calif., Inktomi is the leading provider of
OEM Web search and paid inclusion services. A pioneer in Web
search technology, Inktomi provides millions of users worldwide
with the freshest and most relevant search experience, and ensures
that thousands of online retailers have their content constantly
represented. The company's customers and partners include
Amazon.com, eBay, Lycos/HotBot, MSN, Overture and WalMart.com."
Inktomi was acquired by Yahoo.com in 2003.
- Internet
- A global network composed of millions of computers all linked
by telephone lines, cable, or satellite. More than 100 countries
can access exchanges of data, news and opinions. Unlike online
services, which are centrally controlled, the Internet is
decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, called a host, is
independent. Its operators can choose which Internet services to
use and which local services to make available to the global
Internet community.
- Internet Protocol Address (IP Address)
- This is how computers and robots distinguish your website from
other websites. It is a numerical address which is translated from
your domain address. IE: 148.345.122.163
- Internet Relay Chat (IRC (mIRC) )
- Like ICQ, it is a tool used by webmasters to communicate. More
than just a chat program, IRC allows you to vocally communicate
live in chat rooms. You can download your IRC server interface
from mirc.com,
Tucows.com or
Download.com.
- Integrated Services Digital Network
(ISDN)
- ISDN cards are like modems but five times faster. They require
special telephone lines, which cost a little more than normal
phone lines. ISDN calls are usually charged by the minute, even
for local calls, but this varies from state to state.
- Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- A hosting company that provides access to the internet,
internet services, and resources such as a software package,
username, password and access phone number. You can then use a
modem to browse the World Wide Web and send and receive e-mail.
- Intranet
- An intranet operates just like the internet does, but is only
used by an organization, usually a corporation, and is accessible
only by the organization's members, employees, or others with
authorization. An individual intranet's Web sites look and act
just like normal Web sites. The difference is the protection
surrounding an intranet fends off unauthorized access. Intranets
are used to share information, just like the internet. Secure
intranets are now the fastest-growing segment of the Internet
because they are much less expensive to build and manage than
private networks based on proprietary protocols.
- IP Address
- (see Internet Protocol Address)
- IP Spoofing
- An illegal process of faking an IP address.
- ISP
- (See Internet Service Provider)
