- Legacy Applications
- A program in which an organization has already invested
considerable time and money. Typically, legacy applications are
database management systems (DBMSs) running on the company's
mainframe. New software would only be valuable if it can work with
a company's legacy applications, or at least be able to import
data from them.
- Link
- A button, phrase, or URL which can be clicked on to open a new
website or page.
- Link Farm
- A series of websites with similar content linking to each
other in order to increase their page rank.
- Linux
- Linux is an operating system developed by Norwegian programmer
Linus Torvald. Linux is free and the source code is all 'open',
meaning that anybody can work on the Linux operating system and
post new code to improve it. This concept is known as 'Open
Source'. IBM has adopted Linux as a standard operating system.
Linus is a new system, is hard to install and it is still being
tested, but it very useful and it is free.
- Listserv
- A list of e-mail addresses of individuals who have all asked
to participate in the list to discuss topics of common interest.
The messages that each person posts to the listserv are
automatically e-mailed to every member of the list.
- LOL
- Email shorthand for "Laughs
Out Loud"
or "Laughing Out
Loud" to indicate that the person
thought that the comment they are responding to was funny. Some
people think it means "Lots of Laughs", but that is not the
generally accepted meaning and doesn't make sense in most
contexts.
- Lurker
- An individual who reads message boards or listservs but
rarely, if ever, posts to them. They just absorb the information
shared there rather than participating in the discussion.
